If you're shopping for a three-row SUV that balances space, refinement, and fuel efficiency, the...
Lexus has officially announced the all-new 2027 TZ — the brand's first-ever three-row, all-electric, all-wheel-drive SUV. Unveiled earlier this month, the TZ is designed around a philosophy Lexus calls the "Driving Lounge," a concept that aims to deliver the quietness and comfort of a premium lounge space alongside a genuinely involving driving experience. It is powered by Lexus' TNGA platform and comes standard with an evolved DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system across all grades.
The TZ sits at the centre of an important shift in Lexus electrification. It offers two lithium-ion battery options — 77.0 kWh and 95.8 kWh — with a manufacturer-estimated driving range of up to 480 km on select grades. As a three-row luxury BEV designed for families and multi-passenger travel, it answers a question many Lexus Guests have been asking: can the brand deliver an all-electric SUV big enough for everyone, with no compromise on refinement?
A Cabin Built Around Every Passenger
The interior of the 2027 TZ takes a different approach to three-row packaging. Engineers prioritized a low-floor, long-wheelbase layout — enabled by the TNGA platform — to create genuine headroom and legroom at all three rows. Second-row captain's chairs are standard, and access to the third row is made easier through flush seat rails and a walk-in button that works even with child seats installed.
Third-row passengers get what Lexus describes as "sofa-like cushioning," and the panoramic roof — with a power sunshade on a wire-driven system — provides unobstructed views for all three rows without reducing headroom. Front passenger and second-row seats feature ventilation and available power ottomans, a first for the Lexus SUV lineup.
- Second-row captain's chairs standard
- Third-row sofa-cushion seating with walk-in access
- Panoramic roof with power sunshade covering all three rows
- Front passenger and second-row power ottomans (available)
Forged Bamboo and Sustainable Craftsmanship
One of the most talked-about design details is the Forged Bamboo interior trim. Sourced from Shikoku Island in Japan and produced by blending bamboo fibres into resin, it provides a warm, textural surface that carries genuine sustainable intent. Lexus also uses bio-based UltraSuede on instrument panels and door shoulders, and recycled aluminum for the roof rails and tonneau cover frame. These material choices reflect a deliberate effort to reduce environmental impact without stripping out the feel of a premium cabin.
Interior colour palettes include Birch (light grey), Acorn (medium tone), and a Black/Dapple Gray gradation. Six exterior colour choices are offered, including the new Shaded Ivy — a nuanced tone that balances depth and natural warmth.
TNGA Platform and DIRECT4 AWD
The TZ is built on Lexus' TNGA platform, reinforced with high-rigidity adhesives, laser screw welding, and aluminum components for exceptional torsional stiffness. The evolved DIRECT4 AWD system continuously adjusts torque between the front and rear electric motors based on road conditions — varying between 60:40 and 0:100 (front:rear) under acceleration, and adjusting between 80:20 and 0:100 during cornering.
An available Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) system steers the rear wheels up to 4 degrees in coordination with the front wheels, reducing the minimum turning radius to 5.4 m and enhancing stability at highway speed. The TZ achieves a drag coefficient of 0.27 — one of the lowest among Lexus SUVs — thanks to flush door handles, aerodynamic mirrors, underbody fins, and purpose-designed wheel covers.

Lexus Interface and Charging Technology
The latest-generation Lexus Interface comes standard in the TZ. It introduces customizable home screen widgets, a full-screen navigation view on the digital gauge cluster, and an improved "Hey Lexus" voice assistant. EV-specific features include EV Routing and EV Range Map for trip planning. Drive Recorder records exterior camera footage, and the system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Charging is handled through a Lexus-first 2-in-1 port — AC and DC connectors side by side with a compact motorized cover — making it practical in tight parking situations. The Canadian model uses the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port. Advanced battery management functions include Battery Preconditioning (optimizes battery temperature before charging in cold conditions), Driving Preconditioning, and an Optimal Charging mode that learns usage habits to suggest smarter charging schedules.
