The Last Gas-Only Lexus NX 350: Buy a 2026 Now or Wait for the 2027?

The Last Gas-Only Lexus NX 350: Buy a 2026 Now or Wait for the 2027?

The 2026 Lexus NX gives you three ways to power a compact luxury SUV: the NX 350h hybrid, the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid and the gas-powered NX 350. That last one is about to become a piece of NX history. Lexus has confirmed that the 2027 NX moves to a 100% electrified lineup, with a choice of hybrid or plug-in hybrid power only. That makes the 2026 NX 350 the final gas-only NX.

So which way should you go? If you want a gas NX, the 2026 model year is your last chance to buy one new. If you are open to electrified power, the 2027 NX will bring a long list of upgrades when it arrives. This guide lays out what each one offers so you can make the call with confidence.

Why the 2026 NX 350 Still Makes a Strong Case

The NX 350 is built for drivers who like the feel of a turbocharged gas engine. Its 2.4 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine makes 275 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. That power runs through a Direct Shift 8-speed automatic with paddle shifters, so the NX 350 feels quick and responsive when you merge or pass.

Every NX 350 also comes with electronically controlled full-time all-wheel drive. Drive Mode Select offers Sport, Eco and Normal modes, and Trail Mode is standard for loose or slippery surfaces. Hill-start Assist Control and Downhill Assist Control come along too.

The NX 350 Premium trim is well equipped for Canadian winters. Heated and ventilated front seats, a windshield wiper de-icer, rain-sensing wipers and heated side mirrors are all standard. You also get a power rear door, a power tilt and slide moonroof and LED fog lamps.

Cargo space is generous for a compact SUV. You get 643 litres behind the rear seats and 1,328 litres with the rear seats folded.

What the 2027 NX Will Bring

The 2027 NX moves to the newest Lexus hybrid technology. A new e-Axle puts the transaxle, motor and power control unit in one compact, lightweight package. That helps lower the centre of gravity. Silicon carbide power semiconductors in the inverter add more efficiency.

The plug-in hybrid NX 450h+ will get a newly developed lithium-ion battery with 8% more output and 30% more capacity. Lexus estimates over 64 km of EV range on select plug-in hybrid grades. DC fast charging and a power charge port door will be standard on every plug-in hybrid grade.

All-wheel drive also gets smarter. The new electronic AWD system uses revised rear motor control to keep AWD working during launch, wheel slip and cornering, plus straight-line driving. Lexus says this always-on system improves stability on low-traction surfaces such as snow.

Inside, the 2027 NX will line up a 12.3-inch digital meter with a 14-inch touchscreen on every grade. Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 will be standard across the lineup. A built-in Drive Recorder, available Digital Key and Sensory Concierge on select grades round out the tech. Remote Connect, Safety Connect and Service Connect will each include a 10-year trial.

Choose the 2026 NX 350 If You Want Gas Power

The 2026 NX 350 is the right pick if you want a gas engine with no charging or electrified hardware to think about. It is also the right pick if you want to drive your new NX sooner. The NX 350 is on sale, and it comes in six trims, from Premium to Ultra Luxury and F SPORT 3. That range gives you plenty of ways to match features to your budget and style.

Drivers who enjoy a traditional automatic with eight gears will also feel at home. The turbocharged engine delivers its 317 lb-ft of torque in a way that feels familiar and strong.

Wait for the 2027 NX If You Want the Newest Tech

The 2027 NX makes sense if you want electrified power and the latest Lexus cabin technology. Every grade will pair a hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive. Every grade will also get the 14-inch screen and Lexus Safety System+ 4.0.

If you want to drive on electric power for daily errands, the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid will be the one to watch. Its over 64 km of estimated EV range and standard DC fast charging can cover many short trips without using gas.

Which NX Is Right for You?

Both choices give you a Lexus NX with all-wheel drive and a quiet, well-built cabin. The decision comes down to timing and powertrain. Buy the 2026 NX 350 if you want the last gas-only NX and you want it soon. Wait for the 2027 NX if electrified power and the newest screen and safety tech matter most to you.
